FAIRWELL WINTER MY ASS...

This is what it is beginning to feel like in Eagle, Colorado It looks like the return of Spring 2008 is upon us here in the Colorado High Country. With another 7 inches of pow at Vail this morning and snow in the forecast for the next five days, and alot of it, and a high of 26 today, bike riders are basically FUCKED right now. This is very reminiscent of last spring when it just would not go away. Looks as though we will have to find another "perfect" day to end the ski season on.
On another note, this pic just came in off the wires from the X-Factor in South Africa. Roan Exelby and David Leiman finished 13th overall in the Cape Epic and of course rocked it out on the Squirt Lube.

FAREWELL SKI SEASON????

In a freekin effort to put an end to the ski season, which has come back with vigor, I blew off skiing today until the call came in that the posse was headin up to go rip more turns on bewildered legs. It turned out to be the best ski posse of the year with unreal conditions under blue skies at the Beav. Can we put this thing to rest now? Please.

BIG MOUNTAIN SKIER SHANE MCCONKEY PASSES IN BASE JUMPING ACCIDENT

In 1993, after living in Summit County for 10 years and skiing "The Legend" Arapahoe Basin nearly everyday during the winter of those ten years, I was standing at the bottom of Slalom Slope when I noticed this kid come ripping down the bump face like no one I had ever seen, including at that time big timer bump and extreme skiers Justin Patnode and Dean Cummings. I waited for the kid to get to the bottom of the run where I stood and did not recognize him when he stopped close by. He wore a funky "monk" type hat and had long hair as I remember. I told him I had never seen anyone rip the shit out of Slalom Slope like that before to which he quietly replied "really?" I said "yeah really, that was sick". I introduced myself to him and he told me his name was Shane McConkey. If you follow extreme skiing events at all you know that Shane went on to become just about the best at the extreme game and was an amazing talent. Shane passed today in a Base Jumping accident. A2B sends out the best thoughts to Shane's family and friends. to this day I've never seen anyone ski Slalom Slope better.

IT'S DUMPING BIG TIME...

GOTTA RUN, MORE LATER, HUGE POW DAY AHEAD AT VAIL.

Noooooooo vij of the actual skiing today, it was too good to stop and waste my time taking pictures, Darrin Cheek made the trip over from Summit County and we laughed all morning and afternoon, maybe tomorrow since it is STILL DUMPING tonight and has not stopped! POOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWDEEEEEEER.

TOUGH GUYS TAKE LEAD IN CAPE EPIC..

Germany's Karl Platt and Stefan Sahm took over the lead at the Cape Epic in South Africa despite Platt dislocating his shoulder for the second time in the grueling stage race. Specialized riders Burry Stander and World Champion Christoph Sauser (Squirt Lubers), who had won the opening prologue and the first three stages of the race suffered a bit of a disaster when Stander tacoed a wheel and was left holding the bag on course, they were then penalized 15 minutes for accepting outside assistance and finished ninth on the stage. They will now have to fight big time to gain the 20 minutes they have lost to the leaders, it's not out of the question but it's gonna be a monumental effort with no more probs to pull it off.

In the Individual's race, South African Lieb Loots is leading and Dewet Marais, Squirt Lube developer and owner is currently in 5th place in the Masters class in one of mountain biking's most demanding events.

The X-Factor, Roan Exelby, is currently in 20th place with teammate David Leiman after a 10th place finish in today's stage. They have moved up from 31st place in three days.

THIS IS NOT GOOD....UNLESS YOU ARE WITHIN REACH OF BIG POWDER SKIING..

The glob of weather heading this way is quite simply incredible, tomorrow may be the day of the century skiing at Vail if the forecast holds up. The ten day forecast shows virtually nothing but snow as we head into a big time Spring snow cycle in the high country, this of course SUX for Sea Otter training, however, I'll gladly finish 10 spots back for what awaits us on the ski hill in the next 10 days...bring it.

HOLY SHIT PILES OF SNOW BATMAN!

What the hell is going on around here? Were'nt we just racing Cult Cross in 60+ degree sunny weather on Sunday? I think so...and then this entire crap ton of snow falls at Vail so we have to grind back into "white room" mode for a day.

And then of course why the hell not hit the road if the roads are dry in Eagle where not a stitch of moisture fell from this "upper mountain" storm. Only problem is I nearly froze my freekin johnson off coming back down Brush Creek.

Is this Cult Cross or a Colorado State Championship battle? Tim Faia (Indy Fab) being marked by Spike Shooter riders Overstreet and Thompson, it stayed tight for a while, then the Faia bomb dropped, Thompson had a mechanical and Overstreet held on for second. One of the best battles of the day

ARMSTRONG BREAKS COLLARBONE

The crash scene, photo Graham Watson
Lance Armstrong crashed out of the Vuelta a Castilla y León today and sustained a broken collarbone as well as numerous bruises and abrasions. Sounds like today's route had some pretty sketch road sections and details are not clear just yet. This is the second cycling mishap Lance has been directly tied to this season and it sounds like he may be down for a while...he should have raced Cult Cross this weekend.

DARE I SAY I'M ALREADY BORED WITH ROAD RACING THIS YEAR..

It's Cavendish in Milan-San Remo, sigh.
Yeah, I know the road guys are gonna throw a shitpile fit, but I'm already bored with the predictability of the road racing season this year. Suck a wheel, suck a wheel, suck a wheel, suck another wheel, sprint 500M, Cavendish or Boonen win. Grand tours come, suck a wheel, suck some more wheels, Cavendish or Boonen win the first six flat stages, then drop out. while the guys that can truly climb under pressure (the four or so of them), somehow get through 2000 miles of racing without crashing out and then attack on the critical 10M of the race to become victorious. I'm already snoring. My vote is to throw a couple of Cyclocross races into the mix of the Grand Tours to keep it interesting. The cobbles are indeed awesome and provide some very intense drama for sure, But I'm over the wheel suck, sprint for the line crap. The true victors are the guys up at the front pulling their asses off for the wheel suckers, THEY should get the teddy lion and kisses from the hot chicks at the end of the race. There, now that I've probably pissed off all the roadies, I feel much better today. I've got a Cyclocross race to go run, I'm out.
